Tour of the Alps – Stage 1: Geoffrey Bouchard (AG2R-Citroën) wins solo and takes his first win

Frenchman Geoffrey Bouchard won the first stage of the Tour of the Alps in Primiero/San Martino di Castrozza (Italy) on Monday, resisting with vigor the return of the peloton that was hot on his heels for the jersey of the first to take overall leadership.

Bouchard, winner of the mountain Grand Prix of the last Tour of Italy, first showed his qualities as a climber to make the difference on the two main climbs of the day (Passo Brocon and Passo Gobbera).

But the AG2R Citroën rider also had to morph into a rider to not easily resist the return of the peloton on a much flatter final lap that ended this 160.9km first stage. His lead of almost 2 minutes then melted but the Frenchman held five seconds on the line ahead of the group led by Pello Bilbao (Bahrain-Victorious), second, and Romain Bardet (DSM), third.

Bouchard takes the overall lead in this five-stage race, which will be held on either side of the border between Italy and Austria until Friday.
